Winter Begins

I’ve been thoroughly enjoying the recent amount of snow we’ve been buried in, a sign of winters true arrival I should think. Despite a hectic first morning in the 8 inches of fresh snow, attempting to feed unruly horses who were bright eyed and bushy tailed, things have settled into a nice rhythm with the new encumberance.

Jobi and I have signed up to participate in the “Barefoot Challenge”, to see just how many miles a barefooted Curly horse can manage comfortably. You can watch the progress of the participants at Curly Horse Country. We’ll see how things go this winter, although I predict much of our own mileage will add up once spring begins to peek around the corner.

I have been doing a lot of thinking lately, perhaps it’s the winter lull I seem to be swayed into every year, but I begin doing more thinking and less doing this time of year. A sort of hibernation I suppose one could assume. I’ve been keeping my eyes on one of my babies who is beginning to near her fourth year. Contemplating just when and how I want to go about starting her under saddle. She needs the work on the lunge still, really work all over. She’s got the basics but has had a relatively stress free youth to enjoy. So that is in my thoughts.

I’ve also been getting an itch - especially with the fresh snow - to locate a toboggan to hitch up behind my Paint, Scout.. and go for a ride through the fields. Perhaps if I’m really clever I’ll manage to get my dad to agree to make me a sleigh.. that would be a lot of fun. Until then I’m stuck making snow angels and ponies. :)
